Hardness testing is read in the brinell scale for alloy cylinder heads or components to see how "soft" they have gone. Sufficient hardness is critical for correct gasket sealing and engine performance.  As a general guide a cylinder heads should exceed 65 Brinell. Excessive overheating of an alloy component can cause softness.
